On October 17, 2011, Sidney Kess received the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Gold Medal Award for Distinguished Service.

On October 17, 2011, Sidney Kess received the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Gold Medal Award for Distinguished Service.

The Gold Medal is the highest award granted to a CPA by the AICPA and is given to individuals who have made major contributions to the CPA profession. Kess received the award this week at the fall meeting of the AICPA governing Council. Kathy G. Eddy, chair of the awards committee and former AICPA chair, presented the award.

Claude Millman has been elected to the Fellowship of the Litigation Counsel of America, an honorary trial lawyer society limited to less than one-half of one percent of American lawyers.

Claude Millman has been inducted as a Litigation Counsel of America Fellow.  Mr. Millman was selected for this Fellowship by the Advisory Board of the Litigation Counsel of America (LCA).  The LCA is an honorary trial lawyer society whose membership is limited to less than one-half of one percent of American lawyers.  Through his induction, Mr. Millman joined approximately one hundred other New York City trial lawyers, judges, and/or professors who have been selected for Fellowship based on excellence and accomplishment in litigation, both at the trial and appellate levels, and superior ethical reputation.  Information about the LCA is available on its Web site, www.litcounsel.org

IRS Penalty Assessments on the Rise

The number of accuracy related penalties assessed by the IRS under Internal Revenue Code1 (the "CODE") Sec. 6662 has risen dramatically over the past five years. According to the IRS Data Book Published on the IRS website,2 the number of accuracy-related penalties assessed against individuals has risen from 58,366 in 2005 to 469,321 in 2010, a more than an 800-percent increase. Assessments against corporations have risen dramatically as well, from 1,342 in 2005 to 3,640 in 2010, a 270-percent increase. What is the reason behind this increase; are there more bad taxpayers or is the IRS just getting more aggressive about assessing penalties?
