Jerald David August Presents at the New York Chapter AAML March 2016 Meeting Event, “Tax Effects of Equitable Distribution Settlements or Orders”

When a high net worth couple divorces, there are many tax issues, both substantive and compliance oriented, that must be addressed. One area of special concern is the impact of the law of equitable distribution or equitable division of marital assets and what corresponding tax benefits or burdens are being allocated among the parties to the divorce. Mr. August will present an overview of the tax traps that are present in retaining or transferring part or all of a family business enterprise to a spouse as part of a divorce settlement. Joining the presentation will be two equity valuation experts who have worked on valuing business interests for various purposes including for divorce settlements.  The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers was founded in 1962 to provide “leadership that promotes the highest degree of professionalism and excellence in the practice of family law.” There are currently more than 1600 Fellows of the Academy in 50 states. The Manhattan chapter is among the most highly regarded chapters of the Academy.
